It is time to dream big dreams for our future

Last week I went with my daughter to a presentation organized in Denver by five of the most prestigious universities in the country. I have to confess that I felt out of place and I left the place amazed by my own ignorance of how many and almost incredible opportunities young people have to build a future I cannot even imagine.

At the same time, it is an undeniable demographic reality that the future of the United States will be intertwined with the Hispanic/Latino community. Every census and statistic confirms it.

The combination of a future with vast opportunities and the fact that we, Latinos, have the responsibility of building that future should be motivation enough for us to have big dreams and to work and study harder for us, our children, and our grandchildren.

However, the reality is that we are so obsessed with surviving the present without facing too many problems or challenges that we forget about the future and perhaps we are even afraid of thinking about the future.

Just a short time ago each generation thought that the next one would enjoy a better life than the previous one, precisely because of the efforts and sacrifices of the older generation. Now we have inverted the priorities and we think we can sacrifice future generations so we can keep today our own lifestyle and level of comfort.

For that reason, our future is now shorter and we cannot longer make long-term plans. We are happy with small results and small daily victories. We are afraid of the future.

It was not always like that. Just a few decades ago people thought by this time we would have bases on the moon and manned missions to Mars. Now we are happy if we can put a spacecraft in orbit for a few days.

What has happened to us? Why we are not dreaming anymore? Who took our dreams away? Do we still remember our future?

Wars, terrorism, economic downturn, political changes, and now even a potential pandemic are reasons enough to crush the dreams of even the most optimistic person. But perhaps the solution to all those big challenges and conflicts is precisely to have big dreams for the future and to work to transform those dreams into reality.

We should not take away from our children the opportunity to dream big dreams and to build a better future because in those dreams will grow our own future and the future of our children. In times of desperation, we need to protect our dreams, because dreaming will lead us out of desperation.

If we stop dreaming, our children will not dream either. If we believe that the world will end in four years, we will pass that desperation to the next generation, taking away from them the opportunity of dreaming big dreams even in the middle of a real apocalypse. We shouldn’t forget that after every apocalypse there is a new creation.

It’s time to dream big dreams.
